What is Competition All About?

Auditions are Saturday, June 19th!

Most people instantly think of the show Dance Moms when they think of competition dance. They think of hours upon hours of rehearsal and screaming. Well, our competition team is different!
First, students audition on June 19th by age groups. Our competition team is for ages 5-19 and they train a minimum of two days per week in ballet, tap, jazz, flexibility, and choreography classes. Our other group, our hip hop crews, are for ages 8-19. They train a minimum of one day per week and only compete in hip hop. We do have students that are on both teams.
We will have our lobby televisions showing the auditions. We are looking for students to have prior training. The biggest things we are looking for is ability to focus, ability to pick up choreography, and potential. Unfortunately, not everyone makes the teams at auditions and the student may need more lessons. It is also easier to make the teams when the student is younger. The older they get the more skills they need to have.
For those that are selected, there is a mandatory parent meeting the following Friday. At this point, families are told about all time and financial commitments. You are not signed up for the team until you attend this meeting and sign our competition contract.
The competition team participates in a four day master class at Soar in July. They also attend one convention and three competitions. All group dances are taught during their regular class time during the week. Only those selected for solos and duo/trios have regular rehearsals on Saturdays. Our hip hop crews are only required to attend the three competitions.
As a mother that has two children that compete, I can say there are some very rewarding elements:
-The student develops confidence in their abilities.
-The student learns to work as a team.
-Families enjoy time together at the competitions.
-The students are given opportunities to work with some of the best in the business.
-Our students get used to being onstage and performing. This translates over to other areas of their lives.
If you are thinking about it but not sure, feel free to email me at ashley@soarcreativearts.com. I would be happy to give more details and discuss the students’ abilities. We hope to see you on June 19th at auditions. All times are on our website under Summer 2021!
