Should Your Child Audition for the Competition Team?

At this time of year, parents start asking our opinion if a student should audition for our competition team. Here are some ways to know:
1. Is dance “their thing?” Does your student dance everywhere he or she goes? Do you hear “watch my new step” often? These are clear ways to know that your student has a heart for dance.
2. Do you have the time available? Dance competition students have certain time requirements. Even though we offer a certain amount of excused absences, they are expected to be in class most of the time. Our competition team trains a minimum of two days per week from August through May. Competition doesn’t usually work well if they are involved with multiple other activities.
3. Has your child had training in what they are auditioning for? If your student is auditioning for the regular competition team, they should have at least one year of taking ballet and jazz classes. If they are auditioning for hip hop crew, they should have at least a year of hip hop classes. We are looking for students that are excelling in these areas.
4. Does your student focus well? Kids will be kids, but to get a dance ready for competition, we need students that can focus.
5. We highly recommend students audition at an earlier age. The best age to audition is between 5 to 8 years old. This is the age many students start competing. When they get older, it is harder to make the team because they need to have more skills. However, we always have a few students that make it at older ages.
We are welcoming students that are interested in the team to come to one of our competition showcases. This showcase will show students how a competition class operates and they will see dances that competed this season. This will be on Monday, April 25th and Monday, May 2nd from 5-5:45 p.m. (younger students) or 6-6:45 p.m. (older students). We are only taking four parent/student pairs for each one, so sign up at the front office. Competition can be a very rewarding experience. Don’t hesitate to message me if you have specific questions about the teams. Additional details can be found at https://www.soarcreativearts.com/company.
