5 Things to Know About Dance Competition

Ashley McGlothren • June 13, 2023

Auditions are Saturday, June 17th

Our competition auditions are just a few days away! We are looking forward to our 8th season as a company! We have been blessed to watch our students grow and continue to excel! Here are five things that I would like you to know about our team:

1. I highly recommend students trying out at a young age. When they are young (5-7 for competition team or 8-10 for hip hop crew), we are really just looking for ability to focus, passion for dance, and ability to pick up choreography. When they get older, we are looking for more things especially how they fit with our current students that have been training for years. It is easier to get on our team at a younger age. I hear many people say they may let their kids audition when they are older. Many times, they are missing their opportunity because their peers have started from a young age.

2. Being on our teams is kind of like being on an all-star sports team. We are looking for the best of our studio. Attendance matters. If a student misses a set number of rehearsals, they must schedule paid for private lessons. This is not for you if your student is in nine extracurricular activites and can't be at our rehearsals.

3. Most regular competition students at Soar train two days per week. There are places that will train your child 40 hours per week, but we are not one of them. We keep all our competitions in Louisiana and Mississippi, so we don't travel very far. Our students have went on to win titles, be captain of dance teams, and excel in dance, but we do put a limit on what our studio is willing to do.

4. Our students and parents are encouragers. Most people outside of our studio imagine dance competition as a Dance Moms episode. Actually, our teachers are not yellers. We do need to be firm sometimes and have asked students to step out of the classroom if they are completely disrupting a class, but we don't scream at them. Our students are taught that we are all on the same team and need to encourage each other. They know their placement at competitions is three people's opinions that can change at the next competition. I frequently say that all I care is that they do their best. It is just a plastic trophy anyway!

5. Things you can do to help your child for auditions - Arrive 15 minutes early. View our website competition page and make sure your student wears the right attire and that they have the correct shoes. Remind them that not everyone will make it, but to have a good time. Students should be willing to try new things and have a good attitude.

We have been having a great 10 th year! I cannot believe it is almost registration for summer and fall! Here is how our registration works: - Current students will receive registration forms in the middle of this month. Turn it in and during the week of Easter, our office manager will contact you to schedule your registration appointment. - New families can call or email us ( shannon@soarcreativearts.com ) beginning March 30 th to request a registration appointment. We will get your name, phone number, and some information on the student. We will also call these families during Easter week to schedule the registration appointment. -Registration appointments begin April 14 th . We schedule these by how long the family has been at Soar. These appointments are 20 minutes and we focus on the family to make sure we get them registered for any summer or fall classes they are wanting to take. -We open up online registration on April 22 nd for anyone that didn’t schedule a registration appointment. -At the appointment, be prepared to tell us what class (including the day and time you are choosing) they are enrolling in. You will need to pay any that apply: summer classes, registration fee for fall, and/or fall art material fee. We can’t hold anyone’s spot without payment. - You can view our summer classes at https://www.soarcreativearts.com/summer-2026 -Our fall dance, tumbling, and art classes are also listed on the website. Recommendation – Classes fill up quickly. I would not wait to register for fall as we can’t guarantee there will be openings. The only exception is those auditioning for competition. They don’t need to do a registration appointment unless they are taking summer classes or fall art. We are looking forward to year 11!!!
